fter they were driven out of the garden, Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Abel was a shepherd, keeping sheep, and Cain was a farmer, working the soil. Both of them brought offerings to God: Cain brought the crops that he had grown, and Abel brought the young lambs of his flock to sacrifice to God.

"Am I my brother's keeper?"

God looked at Abel’s offering, and liked it, but God did not like Cain’s offering. Cain’s face fell, and he became hot with anger. God said to Cain, “Why are you angry? If you did well, you would be honored for it. And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door.”

Then Cain talked with his brother Abel, and went with him into a field. When they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, and killed him.

God asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And Cain said, “I don’t know—am I in charge of him?” But God said to Cain, “Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.”

So God cursed Cain, so that the soil would no longer bear crops for him, and made Cain a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.
