David Wins a Wife

W hen David came back from killing the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing, and playing tambourines. The women called to each other as they played, and said, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

200 Foreskins of Philistines
...David brought their foreskins...
Saul was very angry when he heard this. He said, “They give David tens of thousands, and to me they give only thousands—what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul kept his eye on David from that day forward.

Saul’s daughter Michal fell in love with David, and when Saul heard this, he was pleased. He said, “I will give my daughter to David so that she will be a trap for him, and the hands of the Philistines will be against him.” So Saul said to David, “You will be my son-in-law.”

But David said, “It is no small thing to be a king’s son-in-law: I am a poor man, with little stature.” So Saul sent his servants to tell David, “The king does not want any dowry but a hundred foreskins of Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.” But Saul’s plan was to have David die by the hands of the Philistines.

When David heard this, he was pleased. He set out with his men, and killed two hundred Philistines. David took their foreskins, and gave all of them to the king, so that he could be the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave his daughter Michal to David, to be his wife.

Saul saw that God was with David, and that his daughter Michal loved David. And Saul was even more afraid of David, and became his enemy for the rest of his life.
